If you could try a different job for a day, what would you choose?
I would become an infectious disease scientist. I have always enjoyed chemistry, and this field is fascinating to me, even more so now in the light of COVID-19 and the incredible efforts to develop a vaccine so quickly.
What advice would you give someone starting out in your industry?
I’d give the same advice to someone starting out in healthcare that I would in any industry: be true to yourself, your values, and set a goal to learn something new every day.
How do you get yourself out of a slump?
First, and most importantly, I must recognize that I’m in a slump. Once that happens, I find it much easier to self-correct. Everyone goes through periods where they don’t even realize they are in a slump, but usually, as soon as they do, it’s over. Self-awareness is key.
What companies or leaders do you admire?
I don’t have one particular company or person. Instead, I tend to be situational in those I follow and try to emulate. It’s the culmination of experiences throughout my career that make an impact as a whole.
Who has been most instrumental in your career?
I won’t name any names, but for me, the people who I haven’t enjoyed, or didn’t respect, are the ones who really shaped me as a leader. I try to remember the traits I didn’t like, or that I struggled with, and do the opposite. The desire to not be a certain way has helped me develop my skills and leadership style.
How has the pandemic changed the way you go about your business?
Professionally – in every which way. I came into my current role in the midst of the pandemic, so I can’t compare to how it was previously. But, trying to get to know people across the world virtually has been challenging. And of course, the pandemic has really changed everything about health care, from how we deliver care to how we develop our plans and coverage. Personally, the lack of human interaction has been difficult. I am really looking forward to more face-to-face interactions in the near future.
What is your go-to celebration meal, drink or tradition?
There is nothing better than opening a nice bottle of red wine to celebrate something either personally or professionally.
